LiDAR technology
NASA is using LiDAR technology for its next Mars landing. The LiDAR Scanner on iPhone 12 Pro measures how long it takes light to reflect back from objects. So it can create a depth map of whatever space you’re in. Because it’s ultrafast and accurate, AR apps can now transform a room into a realistic rainforest or show you how a new sneaker will fit.

Across the iPhone family, we’re swapping the power adapter and headphones most of us already have for a fast-charging USB-C to Lightning cable. That shrinks packaging, and more boxes per shipment means fewer shipments overall. We’re also transitioning our manufacturing partners to renewable energy. Altogether, this cuts over 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually.
